Jeremy’s Aiken SC Golf Course Picks

Writer's picture: Kendra DeKayKendra DeKay

My husband Jeremy is a recreational golfer who has been avid enough at various points to have excellent insider info of many of the Aiken area golf courses a visitor might care to enjoy. He was kind enough to jump in and share his favs (since I only think of golf courses as places I wish I could ride a horse!)

The Aiken Golf Club

Founded in 1912, this is a links style golf course straight out of history. While the course plays on the shorter side, the narrow fairways demand accuracy with every shot, and the tiered greens provide plenty of challenges for all levels. Loops through the Highland and Kalmia Hill neighborhoods and very reasonably priced.
Both The Lancaster Townhouse and Duck Hook Cottage are very convenient to this course if you need a place to stay while you play!

Cedar Creek Golf Club

The sister course of the Aiken Golf Club, Cedar Creek has a reputation of being Augusta National Lite. With options to play 9 or 18 hole rounds, it’s an excellent spot to play no matter the season. Get your reservations in early for this course though, tee times fill up quickly!

Hounds Lake Golf Club

This one is built a little differently folks! It’s a classic American design, with the feel of walking or riding through a park as you go through. The course contains three 9 hole layouts, and golfers have the option to play a combination of any two they choose. The most popular is the Azalea/Dogwood combination, but my favorite is the Dogwood/Laurel pair.

Midland Valley Golf Club

Possibly one of the best kept secrets in Aiken. This is a course loved by locals, but not as well known to the out of town crowds. This municipal style course it tucked away off of Highway 1 on the way to Augusta, GA. It may not ooo and ahh you like other courses in the area, but it’s definitely worth checking out, especially if you haven’t reserved a tee time and you have the itch to play.

Sweetwater Country Club

Fair warning, this one is a bit of a hike. 45 minute drive to Barnwell, SC actually. But it’s honestly one of the best kept golf courses I’ve ever come across. And it has a little bit of everything. Paying $30 per person (cart included) isn’t such a bad deal either, and on the week days you won’t find a better deal. Be warned though, there are some wicked doglegs on this course, so a layup isn’t a bad option if your draw or fade is a little inconsistent.

Southpointe Golf Club

This one is a trek in the opposite direction. Located in Augusta, GA, this one is a good 45 minute drive. But I promise it is one of the best overall layouts for a public golf course in the Augusta/Aiken area. It won’t be the end of the world if you miss it, but you would be missing out. Another course where you want to reserve well in advance, tee times are hard to come by!

Aiken Vacation Rentals Homes for Golfers

Golfers visiting Aiken will especially enjoy Duck Hook Cottage--owned by a golfing family for generations and rich with golfing memorabilia, and The Lancaster Townhouse, which is just steps from The Aiken Golf Club course. Aiken draws many spectators each year in April for Masters Week at The Augusta National, which is just about 40 minutes from Aiken.
